MONROE’S DOUG FARR LEADS PARTIALLY-COMPLETED FIRST ROUND AT 2009 LGA SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Lake Charles, Louisiana                        August 20, 2009

The weather emerged victorious on the first day of the 20th edition of the Louisiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship at Lake Charles Country Club.   The course dodged a number of showers early in the day but lightning in the vicinity of the course caused play to be suspended at 2:22 p.m. with all of the afternoon players still on the course. Play remained suspended for over three hours with the horn re-starting play sounding at 5:40 p.m. 40 of the 138 players that started the day were still on the course when play was suspended for darkness at 7:45 p.m.

Those players that did not complete play will return for a 7:00 a.m. re-start Friday morning with the second round scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. Players will be paired in the same groups for second round play as they were for first round play.

Monroe’s Doug Farr, who was in one of the last groups to finish, shot a three-under par 69 to lead those that completed play on Thursday. Finishing one shot back, with two-under par rounds of 70, through the partially completed first round were Bob Cooper, also of Monroe, Alexandria’s Jay Branham, Mark Graff of Boyce, John Henchy of Baton Rouge, and Mitch Sexton of Mandeville. Lake Charles CC member Wayne Sweeney was alone with his one-under par 71.

As mentioned, this year’s Championship is being held at Lake Charles Country Club. The club, one of the first in Louisiana, was organized in 1919 and has hosted a number of LGA Championships over the years, including last year’s Senior 4-Ball Championship. The course is in wonderful shape and survived the Thursday showers well. It is drawing accolades from this field of the top Senior (50 & Over) players in Louisiana and is playing to a par of 72 at just over 6,600 yards.

The LGA is also conducting Age Group Championships the first two days over 36 holes. See below for leaders in the Age Group Championships after 18 holes:
