DOUG FARR WINS LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Lake Charles, Louisiana                        August 22, 2009

Doug Farr of Monroe shot a two-under par 70 Saturday to win the 2009 Louisiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship by one shot over Defending Champion John Davis of Lafayette, who fired a final round, tournament-best, seven-under par 65. Farr finished at 11-under par 205, with Davis one shot back at 10-under 206. What had appeared to be a foregone conclusion when play started on Saturday, turned into a battle down to the wire.  Davis shot five-under 31 on the front side, erasing four of the six shots he was in arrears of Farr with nine holes to play. Farr, who entered the day five shots ahead of Bob Cooper, also of Monroe, and six shots up on Davis, shot one-under 35, but saw his lead shrink under the birdie barrage by Davis.  Cooper, playing in the final group with Farr and Davis, shot even-par 36 but continued to lose ground to both.

Both players parred #10 and birdied #11, but when Farr hit his tee shot out-of-bounds on #12 and made double bogey, he and Davis were dead even with six holes left. They exchanged pars on holes #13, #14, #15, and #16; then Farr re-took the lead when he hit his second shot to within a foot on the par four seventeenth hole for birdie, and Davis missed his 12 footer, also for birdie. An up-and-down birdie by Davis was matched with a two-putt birdie by Farr on the short par five 18th, ending what had been an exciting finish to a great Championship.

Cooper finished alone in third place after his third consecutive under-par round, finishing at five-under par 211 (70/70/71). Rick Bratcher of LaPlace and John Henchy of Baton Rouge tied for fourth at four-under 212, both firing final-round 69s.

Rounding out the Top Ten were: 6. Hal Wright of Shreveport (215), 7. Robert Shelton of Lafayette (216), 8. Johnny Futch of Monroe (217), and T9. Eddie Lyons of Shreveport, Bill Land of Lafayette, and Jay Branham of Alexandria (218).

Other scores of par or better on Saturday were turned in by: Shelton (69), Futch (70), Mike Ameen of Shreveport (70), Lyons (71), Mac Blanchard of Lake Charles (71), Land (72), Scott Freeland of Baton Rouge (72), and Mark Tolson of Lafayette (72).

This year’s Championship was conducted at Lake Charles Country Club, one of the oldest clubs in the state. The course, which also hosted last year’s LGA Senior 4-Ball Championship, continued to draw accolades from this field of the top Senior (Age 50 & Over) players in Louisiana. LCCC’s par-72 track played at just over 6,600 yards for the final round of this Championship, which was played under clear skies, a welcome change from the intermittent storms of the first two days. The field was cut to the low 60 and ties after 36 holes with 62 players making the cut at 160.

The 2010 LGA Senior Amateur will be conducted at the TPC Louisiana course in New Orleans, site of the annual PGA Tour Zurich Classic.
