THREE WAY TIE FOR LEAD AFTER FIRST ROUND OF LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION 4-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

July 18, 2009                 New Orleans, LA

Birdies were plentiful on Saturday at the TPC Louisiana, as the Louisiana Golf Association conducted its annual 4-Ball Championship at the Pete Dye-designed facility in Avondale, just southwest of New Orleans. The teams of Robert Shelton and Ben Thibeaux of Lafayette, Scott Sterbcow of Metairie and Darell Benoit of Belle Chasse, and Blakely Kelley of Mandeville and Garrett Westbrook of Baton Rouge, all shot rounds of nine-under par 63 on Saturday to lead the field by two shots heading into the final round on Sunday.

Shelton led his team with seven birdies, converting on #1, #8, #9, #10, #14, #17, and #18, with Thibeaux contributing birdies on #4 and #12 as they fashioned their bogey-free 63.

The Sterbcow/Benoit team also went bogeyless, capitalizing on birdies by Benoit on holes #3, #5, and #12, with Sterbcow making eagle three on #2, and birdies on holes #6, #14, and #17. Both players made birdie three on the par four 8th.

Kelley and Westbrook’s round was not quite as consistent, but just as efficient. Kelley began with birdies on #1 and #2, with Westbrook birdying #6. After both birdied #8, Westbrook birdied #9 to turn in five-under 31. They split birdies on #10 and #11 before carding their only bogey of the day on #12. Birdies by Westbrook on #14 and #16, with a final birdie on #18 by Kelley brought them home in 32 for their round of 63.

The father-son team of Craig and Paul Broussard of Lake Charles hold fourth place alone at 65, with a trio of teams, Dusty Green of Boyce and Justin Lowe of Ball, Kevin Morvant and Mark Leblanc of Houma, and Jim Swanson and Kevin Gros of Baton Rouge, in a tie for fifth at 66. Six teams share eighth place at five-under 67.

The TPC Louisiana track has been inundated with almost three inches of rain over the last 48 hours but in spite of the rain, the course drew rave reviews from this field of the top players in the state. It played to a par of 72 at just under 7,000 yards. The TPC Louisiana hosts the PGA Tour’s annual New Orleans stop, the Zurich Classic, and will also host the LGA Senior Amateur Championship in August of 2010.

Sunday’s times will begin at 7:00 AM off #1 tee with the leaders scheduled to tee off  at 11:50 AM.

All scores and pairings to follow.
