WOODWORTH’S TYLER LEDET SHOOTS 67 TO LEAD 2009 LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

July 8, 2009 - - Alexandria, LA

Local golfer Tyler Ledet of Woodworth fired a five-under par 67 on Wednesday to capture the first round lead in the 52nd Louisiana Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship.

Ledet, who lives just down the road from the host venue, Alexandria Golf & Country Club is also a member there. He birdied the par five first hole and never let up, also making birdies on #7 and #8, before his only blemish of the day, a bogey on #9, allowing him to turn in two-under 34. Birdies on the par five 11th, the par three 14th, and the par four 15th, got him to five-under par on the day. Three finishing pars completed his back nine 33 and his round of 67.

Alone in second after 18 holes is Hayden Bigby of Bossier City. Bigby, who played in the group just ahead of Ledet, also birdied the first. He bogeyed the par three 3rd, then finished his front side with a bang, birdying the difficult downhill par three 7th, then making an eagle three on the par five 8th. A par on #9 gave him a three-under 33 on Alexandria’s front nine. He made six consecutive pars to start the back nine, then bogeyed #16 and #18 to let a great round get away. He starts Thursday’s second round four shots back of Ledet, at one-under par 71.

Taylor Netherton and Timothy Wilson, both of Shreveport, shot even par 72s on Wednesday to share third place, with defending champion Travis Wilmore of Alexandria alone in fifth place at two-over par 74. Drew Kirby of Baton Rouge, Myles Lewis of Metairie, and Peyton Vitter of New Orleans are tied for sixth at 75, with Anthony Lacombe of Baton Rouge and Jordan Karam of Lake Charles rounding out the Top Ten at 76.

Thursday’s play will again begin at 7:30 a.m. off both #1 and #10, with the Overall Championship participants all going off in the morning.  The leaders will go off the first hole at 8:51 a.m.  Age-Group participants will complete play on Thursday with awards being presented upon completion of play Thursday afternoon.

As mentioned, this year’s Championship is being played at Alexandria Golf & Country Club.  Wednesday’s play was conducted under hot and humid conditions, typical for this time of year in central Louisiana.  The Alexandria G & CC course is playing to a par of 72 at approximately 6,550 yards for the Championship. With small greens and thick rough, the course is providing a strong test for this field of the top Juniors in the state. This year’s competitors are hoping to join Hal Sutton, David Toms, and Willie Wood as Champions of this event.

In addition to the Overall Junior Amateur Championship, the LGA also conducts Age-Group Championships for Ages 10-12 and 13-14.
