TYLER LEDET GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE TO WIN 2009 LGA JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

July 10, 2009     Woodworth, LA

Tyler Ledet of Woodworth shot a conservative two-over par 74 on Friday to win the 2009 Louisiana Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship by five shots over Peyton Vitter of New Orleans. He finished 54 holes at three-under par 213.

His first round of five-under 67 on Wednesday set the stage for the victory, staking him to a four shot lead after 18 holes. After day two his lead increased to six, with Vitter’s 70 vaulting him into second place, and Friday’s 74 earned him the five shot win over Vitter, who finished at two-over 218, the second consecutive year Vitter has finished as runner-up in this Championship.

Ledet, who lives just off the sixth tee at the host venue, Alexandria G & CC, got off to his typical quick start, making birdie on the par five first hole. Bogeys by Ledet at #3, #5, and #7 would have brought Vitter right back into the thick of things were it not for a tee shot that sailed out of bounds on the par three 7th hole. The ensuing triple bogey six by Vitter gave Ledet some additional breathing room, but Vitter quickly righted the ship, making birdies on #8, #9, and #11. Ledet also birdied #8, but when he bogeyed #12 and #13, Vitter was within three shots with five to play. Ledet played the final five holes in one-under par to lock up the title.

Hunter Gauntlett of Shreveport finished alone in third at 219 after the day’s best round, a five-under par 67. Fourth place went to Shreveport’s Taylor Netherton, who had a two-under 70 on Friday, at 222, with Paul Broussard of Lake Charles finishing fifth at 223. Grady Brame, Jr., Lewis Peters II, and Hayden Bigby finished in a tie for sixth at 225, with Matt Decell alone in ninth at 226 after a 70 on Friday. Rounding out the Top Ten at 227 were Drew Kirby of Baton Rouge and Timothy Wilson of Shreveport.

Ledet joins Hal Sutton and David Toms as LGA Junior Amateur Champions by winning the 52nd edition of this, the most prestigious Junior Championship in the state.

Winners of the first and second flights in the overall championship were: 1st Flight – Matt Decell of Baton Rouge/226, 2nd Flight – Blake DeRouen of Lake Charles/234.

This year’s Championship was played at Alexandria Golf & Country Club for the first time since 2001.  Conditions were again hot and humid for this field of the best Junior players in the state. The Alexandria G & CC course, known for its small greens and thick rough, played to a par of 72 at approximately 6,550 yards on Friday.

The 2010 LGA Junior Championship will be held at Ellendale Country Club in Houma.
