HAL WRIGHT AND TERRY HURD CLAIM 2009 LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Shreveport, Louisiana – First-round leaders Hal Wright and Terry Hurd of Shreveport fired a three-under par 69 on Sunday to capture the 22nd edition of the Louisiana Golf Association Senior Four-Ball Championship by one shot over a trio of teams at Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport. They finished at 10-under par 134, their 69 on Sunday complimented by Saturday’s seven-under 65.

Ahead by one starting the day on Sunday, Wright and Hurd turned at even par with birdies on #1 and #3 and bogeys on #7 and #8, relinquishing the lead briefly to Wade Botts of Shreveport and Mike Partin of Haughton. Botts and Partin birdied five of their first 10 holes on Sunday to take a two-shot lead over Wright and Hurd through 10 holes. Their magic disappeared on the back as they made all pars coming in to finish at five-under 67 and nine-under 135 for the tournament. Wright and Botts turned it around on the back with Wright making birdie on #11 and Hurd following suit with birdies on #13 and #16, to put them up by a shot. It all came down to the final hole with Hurd getting up-and-down from just off the green on the par five 18th hole to save par and take the title by one shot over Botts and Partin (68/67-135), John Davis and Bill Land of Lafayette (69/66-135), and Byron May and Charlton Holmes of Shreveport (71/64-135), who fired the tournament’s best round of 64 on Sunday.

Rounding out the Top Five and finishing alone in fifth at 136 (66/70) was the team of Eddie Lyons and Mike Mitton of Shreveport.

In addition to the Overall Championship, players also competed in Age Group Championships.   In the 60-64 Age Group, Mark Tolson of Lafayette and Henry Cole of Monroe took home the title, shooting four-under par 140 (70/70), while Corky Yates of Pineville and Curt McClure of Shreveport captured the 65-69 Age Group Championship, also with a two day total of four-under 140 (71/69).

This year’s Championship was held at Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport. The course continued to draw rave reviews from this field of the best Senior players in the state. It played to a par of 72 at 6,600 yards on Sunday.
