SHREVEPORT’S HAL WRIGHT AND TERRY HURD LEAD AFTER FIRST ROUND AT 2008 LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Shreveport, Louisiana               September 26, 2009

Local Shreveport golfers Hal Wright and Terry Hurd, playing out of Olde Oaks Golf Club, fired a seven-under par 65 on Saturday to take the first round lead in the 2009 Louisiana Golf Association Senior 4-Ball Championship.

They got off to a blazing start with birdies on five of the first seven holes, Hurd starting things off with a birdie on #1, Wright making birdies on #3 and #4, with Hurd taking over again by birdying #6 and #7. Making the turn at five-under, the back nine was only slightly less productive, with Hurd birdies on #11 and #16 bringing them in at 31/34-65.

Tied for second place, one shot back heading into Sunday, is another pair of Shreveport players, Eddie Lyons and Mike Mitton; along with Bruce Gilcrease of Denham Springs and Wil Dees of Baton Rouge. The Lyons/Mitton team began their day par-par-bogey, and stood one-over par through four holes before catching fire with birdies on the next four holes, Mitton taking care of holes #5 and #8 with Lyons doing his part on holes #6 and #7. Lyons also birdied #11, #12, #14, and #18 on the backside, a team bogey on #15 the only blemish coming in. Eight birdies on the day, coupled with their two bogeys brought them in at six-under par 66. The Gilcrease/Dees team was even par through five, finishing out their last 13 holes with seven birdies and a lone bogey on #8. Dees had birdies on #6, #7, #10, #12, and #13, with Gilcrease contributing birdies on #3, #17, and #18. They also had a team bogey on #3 to fire their 35/31-66.

Alone in fourth place after a five-under par round of 67 is the team of Jean Hall of Choudrant and Jack Rivers of Downsville. Wade Botts of Shreveport and Mike Partin of Haughton shot four-under par 68, as did Bob Cooper of Monroe and David Netherton of Shreveport and are tied for fifth heading into Sunday’s final round.

Other scores under par include: John Davis and Bill Land of Lafayette (69), 2006 Champions Glenn Roscoe of Calhoun and Johnny Futch of Monroe (70), Robert Martin of Bossier City and Neil Johnston of Benton (70), Rick Brinker of Bossier City and Scott Morgan of Benton (70), Russ Gaudin and John Henchy of Baton Rouge (70), Jay Pierson of Shreveport and Shep Platt of Baton Rouge (70), Henry Cole of Monroe and Mark Tolson of Lafayette (70), Robert Barrett of Baton Rouge and Bud Barrow of Lafayette (71), Charlton Holmes and Byron May of Shreveport (71), and Frank Maxwell and Dale Cagnolatti of Delhi (71).

Defending Champions Dennis Smith and Brad Mosing of Lafayette struggled on Saturday, shooting a two-over par 74.

In addition to the Overall Championship, Age-Group Championships are also being conducted for ages 60-64 and 65-69. In the 60-64 Age Group, the aforementioned Gilcrease/Dees team (66) leads the Hall/Rivers team (67) by one shot. In the 65-69 Age Group, Curt McClure of Shreveport and Corky Yates of Pineville (71) lead Guy Bradford of Benton and Lewis Jones of Shreveport (74) by three shots.

This year’s Championship is being held at Southern Trace Country Club, an Arthur Hills-design in south Shreveport. The course is in wonderful shape, playing a tad longer than its measured length of 6,600 yards on Saturday due to the rainfall last week in the Shreveport area. It continues to draw rave reviews from this field of the top Senior players in the state.
