ALEXANDRIA’S OAKWING GOLF CLUB TAKES FOUR-SHOT VICTORY IN 2009 LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION CLUB TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

April 19, 2008 Marksville, Louisiana

Starting the day four shots behind first round leader University Club of Baton Rouge, Alexandria’s OakWing Golf Club shot a one-over par 285 on Sunday to capture the 2009 Louisiana Golf Association Club Team Championship at Tamahka Trails Golf Club in Marksville. With a two day total of six-under par 420, they finished six shots ahead of the runner-up team from Beau Chene Country Club of Mandeville.

Dusty Green led the OakWing team with a two-under par 69; Craig Campo had a one-under 70, Jason Lewis fired a one-over 72, and Frank Brame finished at three-over 74 on Sunday. Ben Hargis and Keith Breazeale rounded out the OakWing team.  Beau Chene was led by the day’s medalist Andy Smith, who fired a five-under par 66. Skip Sewell and Jay Coxe had even-par 72s for Beau Chene with Joel Childress rounding out the Beau Chene scores with a 77. Other Beau Chene team members were Pete Theo and Gary Barocco.

Southern Pines/Hills Will Ticheli had the day's second best score with a four-under 67 with other under par scores recorded by Ellendale CC’s Bryan Hamner, Southern Pines/Calvert’s Clint Foster, and the Farm d’Allie’s Larry Woods, who all shot one-under par 70s.

The shot of the tournament was struck by Pelican Point’s Barry Stockwell on Saturday as he knocked a seven-iron into the hole on the 165 yard 6th hole.  The ace was his third and helped he and his teammate Cody Trabeau to an even par 72 in four-ball play.

The Championship drew 20 teams from across the state of Louisiana. Clubs participating in the event are represented by six-man teams. Saturday’s play consisted of four-ball stroke play with each team counting the two best of their three four-ball scores. Sunday’s play consisted of individual stroke play with a team’s score being determined by the best four of six individual scores.

The 2009 LGA Club Team Championship was conducted at Tamahka Trails Golf Club, a Steve Smyers-designed facility in Marksville. The course was inundated with over three inches of rain on Friday and Saturday nights, with five groups having to return on Sunday morning to complete their first round. Playing to a par of 71 at 6600 yards, the course drew rave reviews, despite the wet conditions, from this strong LGA field.
