JOHN DAVIS TAKES LEAD HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND AT 2008 LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Lafayette, Louisiana August 15, 2008
Lafayette’s John Davis followed up his 69 on Thursday with a two-under par 70 on Friday to take a one-shot lead over first round leader Robert Shelton, also of Lafayette, heading into final round play on Saturday in the 2008 Louisiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship. Shelton fired a one-over 73 on Friday to stand at four-under 140 after 36 holes, one shot in arrears of Davis’s five-under par 139.
2003 Senior Champion Eddie Lyons and Hal Wright, both of Shreveport, stand tied for third place at two-under par 142. Lyons shot the low score of the day, a three-under 69, while Wright had a one-over 73. Alone in fifth place is Defending Champion Bob Cooper of Monroe at one-under par 143 after a two-under 70 on Friday. Bill Land and Larry Aillet of Lafayette are tied for sixth at even par 144 with 2005 Champion Darell Benoit of Belle Chasse, Keith Kline of Mandeville, and Frank Schroeder of Baton Rouge tied for eighth at one-over 145.
After making the turn at even par (a birdie on #4 and a bogey on #7), Davis made his move with birdies on #10, #14, and #17, his lone bogey on the back nine coming on the par four 12th hole. Shelton birdied the 18th hole to get back to within one shot, while Wright, who entered the day two shots behind Shelton, survived a triple bogey seven on #5 to card his 73. Lyons had five birdies on the day to offset bogeys on #5 and #15.
Other scores of par or better on Friday were turned in by: Aillet (70), Kline (71), Kyle DeJean of Opelousas (71), Benoit (72), and Russ Gaudin of Baton Rouge (72)
