JOHN DAVIS CLAIMS SECOND LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Lafayette, Louisiana August 16, 2008
John Davis of Lafayette took home his second Louisiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship in three years on Saturday, outdistancing a strong field by five shots, firing a final round five-under par 67 for a 54-hole total of ten-under par 206. Fellow Lafayette resident Robert Shelton finished as runner-up after a 71 on Saturday. Davis also won the 2006 Senior Amateur held at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette.
Taking a one stroke lead over Shelton and a three stroke cushion on Hal Wright and Eddie Lyons into final round play, Davis tightened the noose by making birdies on the first two holes to extend his lead to three. Shelton’s bogey and a double bogey by Lyons on the par three third extended the lead to four and gave Davis the cushion he needed to close the deal. He turned in one-under par 35, his only blemish of the day coming with a bogey on the par three seventh hole. A chip-in birdie three on #10 jump-started his back side; a two-putt birdie on #11 and finishing birdies on #s13 and 14 brought him in with a four-under 32 for his 67. Shelton also shot 32 on the back to fashion his one-under 71. He had a 54-hole total of five-under 211 for second place all alone.
Hal Wright of Shreveport shot 36-34/70 on Saturday to claim third place at four-under 212, while Defending Champion Bob Cooper and Johnny Futch, both of Monroe, shared fourth place at even par 216, Futch firing a 69 on Saturday and Cooper a 73.
Rounding out the Top Ten were: 6. Frank Schroeder of Baton Rouge, 217; 7. Eddie Lyons of Shreveport, 218; T8. Larry Aillet of Lafayette and Keith Kline of Mandeville, 219; and 10. Mark Graff of Boyce, 220.
This year’s Championship was conducted at the Farm d’Allie Golf Club in Lafayette. The course, which also hosted last year’s LGA Club Team Championship, continued to draw accolades from this field of the top Senior (Age 50 & Over) players in Louisiana. The Farm’s par-72 track played at 6,800 yards for the final round of this Championship, which was delayed at the start on Saturday by one hour as a quick moving storm passed over the course. The field was cut to the low 60 and ties after 36 holes with 61 players making the cut at 161.
