ROBERT SHELTON TAKES TWO-SHOT LEAD INTO SECOND ROUND AT 2008 LGA SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Lafayette, Louisiana August 14, 2008
Lafayette’s Robert Shelton shot five-under par 67 on Thursday to capture the first-round lead in the 19th edition of the Louisiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship at the Farm d’Allie Golf Club in Lafayette. Shelton parred his first six holes before making birdie on the par three 7th hole to turn in one-under par 35. Birdies on #10, #11, #15, and #18 brought him in with a four-under 32 on the back nine and his five-under total of 67.
Playing in the first afternoon group, Shreveport’s Hal Wright hit a five-iron exactly 182 yards on the 17th hole Thursday. The best part was that the shot was dead on line, hitting the bottom of the flagstick and staying in the hole for his third-ever ace. The hole-in-one got him to three-under par on the day and with a par on the last, in the clubhouse with a three-under 69. It also got him paired with Shelton and Lafayette’s John Davis in the last group on Friday. Wright’s only bogey of the day came early, a four on the par three third hole. After that it was all pars, save for birdies on #6 and #7 and his eagle one on #17. 2006 Senior Am Champion Davis also shot 69 to share second place with Wright. Davis’s card was also a model of consistency with 15 pars and birdies on #4 and #11 (both par fives) and the 16th hole, a difficult par four.
Rounding out the Top Ten after first round play were: 4. Bill Land of Lafayette (70), 5. Bobby Bernard of Baton Rouge (71), T6 at even par 72; Al Christman of Delhi, Frank Schroeder of Baton Rouge, Mark Graff of Boyce, and Frank Maxwell of Delhi (72), and T10 at one-over 73; defending Champion Bob Cooper of Monroe, 2005 Senior Am Champion Darell Benoit of Belle Chasse, 2003 Senior Am Champion Eddie Lyons of Shreveport, Dan Subik of Mandeville, Johnny Futch of Monroe, Knox Ridley of Shreveport, Sid Harp of Donaldsonville, Brad Mosing of Lafayette, and Rick Brinker of Bossier City.
As mentioned, this year’s Championship is being held at Farm d’Allie Golf Club in Lafayette. The course has recovered nicely from over an inch of rain on Tuesday and drew accolades from this field of the top Senior (50 & Over) players in Louisiana. It is playing to a par of 72 at just over 6,700 yards. Thursday’s play was conducted under hot conditions, typical for this time of year in south Louisiana.
The field will be cut to the low 60 and ties after Friday’s play. Play will begin at 7:30 AM again on Friday off both #1 and #10 tees. The leaders are scheduled to go off #1 tee at 12:45 PM.
