TOMMY BRENNAN CAPTURES FOURTH CONSECUTIVE (AND SEVENTH OVERALL) LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIAION MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Covington’s Tommy Brennan won his fourth Louisiana Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship in a row, and seventh overall, on Sunday, besting Robby McWilliams of Bossier City by two shots. Taking a two shot lead into the final round after a superb five-under par 67 second round, Brennan played consistent golf on the front nine, making eight pars sandwiched around a birdie on the par five 7th hole. McWilliams, playing one group in front of Brennan, turned the front nine in two-under par to creep within one shot of the lead.

McWilliams bogeyed #10 to fall another shot behind, Brennan following with a ten footer for par on #10, the first of a number of par saves on the back nine. A birdie on the par five 11th gave Brennan another stoke cushion heading into the difficult stretch of the 438 yard par four 12th, 200 yard par three 13th, and 400 yard par four 14th. A McWilliams bogey on #13, coupled with a Brennan par gave the eventual champion a four stroke lead with five holes to play. All pars coming in for Brennan were enough to offset McWilliams’s birdies on #14 and #16, giving Brennan his final two stroke win and fourth consecutive Championship. Brennan shot two-under par 70 on Sunday to finish at seven-under par 209, while McWilliams ended at five-under 211 after also firing a 70 on Sunday. These two competitors have waged a personal battle for this title over the last four years, Brennan winning each event, with McWilliams finishing as runner-up in 2005, 2007, and again this year.

John Davis and Robert Shelton of Lafayette finished in a tie for third at three-under 213, with Robby Going and George Cestia of Lake Charles sharing fifth place at two-under par 214.

Rounding out the Top Ten were: 7. Bo Stewart, Lake Charles/215; T8. Chris Wilson, Monroe/216; T8. Rod Baronet, LeCompte/216; and 10. Jeff Calloway, Baton Rouge/217.

The shot of the day was struck by Houma’s Skippy Jones during second round play. Playing the 152 yard par three 17th hole, Jones one-hopped a six-iron into the hole for his first-ever ace.

Playing to a par of 72 at just over 7,000 yards on Sunday, the Joe Finger-designed Ellendale CC track continued to draw accolades from this field of the best 25 years of age and older players in Louisiana. Sunday’s play was conducted under typical August weather in south Louisiana, extremely hot and humid, with the players getting intermittent relief from the cloud cover that existed for most of the day.

Sunday’s play began at 8:30 AM with a resumption of the second round which had been suspended by darkness Saturday night. The second round was completed at 10:30 AM, with third round play commencing at 11:30 AM.

All scores to follow.
