PLAY SUSPENDED WITH MAJORITY OF GOLFERS STILL TO FINISH ROUND ON FRIDAY AT LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

August 1, 2008             Houma, LA

LaPlace’s Rick Bratcher shot a 3-under par 69 but he can’t actually claim the first round lead as only 30 players finished their round on Friday at the Louisiana Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship. Play was suspended at 12:30 pm with almost half the field on the course and another 45 yet to play a shot. The skies opened up and delivered over two inches of rain in under an hour, rendering the Ellendale Country Club course unplayable. Those still on the course will restart play on Saturday morning at 8:30 am with those yet to start their first round following. Second round play will commence at 12:30 pm on Saturday with competitors playing in the same groups as in the first round and starting five hours later than their first round starting times.

Other completed first round scores of note include UL-Monroe golf coach Chris Wilson at two-under par 70, LeCompte’s Rod Baronet at one-under 71, and two time Mid-Amateur Champion John Davis of Lafayette at even par 72. John Henchy of Baton Rouge, Jeff Lorio of New Orleans, Casey Roussel of Thibodaux, Dennis Shill of Baton Rouge, Bo Stewart of Lake Charles, and Ted Teel of Bossier City all had one-over par rounds of 73.

The Joe Finger designed Ellendale Country Club course drew rave reviews from this field of the top players in the state 25 years of age and older. It played to a par of 72 at just under 7,000 yards. The course, known for its moss covered oak and cypress trees and small greens, is in top condition.  Friday morning’s weather was overcast and humid, a precursor to the afternoon storm that suspended play.

At the conclusion of second round play the field will be cut to the low 60 scorers and ties.
