TOMMY BRENNAN AND GAYLE SANCHEZ LEAD AFTER FIRST ROUND OF LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION 4-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
July 19, 2008 Springfield, LA
Birdies were plentiful on Saturday at Carter Plantation in Springfield, as the Louisiana Golf Association conducted its annual 4-Ball Championship at the David Toms designed facility just southwest of Hammond.
Covington’s Tommy Brennan and Gayle Sanchez of Baton Rouge take a one shot lead into Sunday’s final round in the 2008 Championship. Buoyed by Brennan’s four birdie chip-ins, the leaders shot a nine-under par 63. They got off to a great start with Sanchez making birdies on holes #2 and #4, sandwiched around a Brennan birdie on the par three 3rd. Brennan also birdied #s 8, 12, and 16, with both partners carding birdies on #s 7, 10, and 18.
In second place by themselves, one shot back of the leaders, are Jeff Calloway and Page Breaux of Baton Rouge. The University Club members got off to a slow start, playing their first 10 holes at two-under par, Breaux birdying the first and ninth holes. They then birdied six of their final eight holes, Breaux firing birdies on 11, 14, and 15, with Calloway getting into the act with birdies on 13, 17, and 18.
Tied for third another shot back are Andrew Loupe and James Swanson of Baton Rouge and Tim Wilhite and Eddie Seabaugh of Shreveport. Loupe and Swanson also got off to a slow start, only getting to two-under par through 12 holes. They finished strong, however, with Loupe making birdies on holes 13, 14, 16, and 18, and Swanson birdying the par three 17th.
Wilhite and Seabaugh, starting on the 10th hole with the split tee start on Saturday, got their round kick-started early, as Seabaugh played holes 13 through 15 at four-under par, including a pitch into the hole for an eagle two on the short par four 14th. After turning at four-under, Wilhite birdied #2, Seabaugh birdied #s 4 and 5, and they concluded their round with four consecutive pars to finish off their 65.
Brennan and Sanchez are both former LGA Mid-Amateur Champions, Brennan having won the Mid-Am title no less than five times with Sanchez capturing the crown in 1994.
The Carter Plantation track drew rave reviews from this field of some of the top players in the state. It played to a par of 72 at just over 7,000 yards. The course is in excellent condition, with the fairways firming up and the greens putting extremely true.
Sunday’s times will begin at 7:30 AM off both #1 and #10 tees with the leaders scheduled to tee off #1 at 9:20 AM.
All scores and pairings to follow.
