TOMMY BRENNAN AND GAYLE SANCHEZ TAKE HOME TITLE AT LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION 4-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

July 20, 2008                 Springfield, LA

Covington’s Tommy Brennan and Gayle Sanchez from Baton Rouge withheld final round charges from the team of Andrew Loupe and James Swanson of Baton Rouge early in the day, and then later from Jeff Calloway and Page Breaux, also of Baton Rouge, to take home the 2008 Louisiana Golf Association 4-Ball Championship.

The Loupe/Swanson team fired a five-under 31 on the front to sneak within a shot of the eventual winners, who shot four-under themselves after a string of four consecutive birdies on holes # 5, 6, 7, and 8. Calloway and Breaux had a three-under 33 to stay within striking distance heading to the back nine.

With Loupe and Swanson playing one group ahead of the Brennan/Sanchez and Calloway/Breaux grouping, birdies weren’t quite as plentiful on the inward nine. Loupe made birdie three on #14 and Swanson finished the day with a birdie on #18 to finish with a 7-under par 65, while Calloway birdied #10 to creep within one shot of the leaders with eight holes to play. Sanchez birdied the par five 13th, Breaux matching it with a birdie three one hole later. Both teams birdied #15, with Sanchez closing the door with a short birdie putt on the difficult par four 16th to bring his team two shots clear with two holes to play. Both teams finished with pars on #17 and #18, Calloway/Breaux finishing with a six-under par 66 and a two day total of 14-under 130, Brennan/Sanchez shooting 65 to finish at 16-under par 128.

Rounding out the Top Five teams were: T2. Calloway/Breaux, 64/66-130, and Loupe/Swanson, 65/65-130; 4. Bill Land/John Talley of Lafayette, 66/65-131; and 5. Michael Anderson/Todd Jackson of Baton Rouge, 69/64-133.

The David Toms designed Carter Plantation track was in great condition for this field of the top players in the state. It played to a par of 72 on Sunday at just over 6,700 yards. The weather was typical for summer in south Louisiana, hot and humid with just a hint of a breeze.

Carter Plantation will also serve as host to the 90th edition of the LGA Amateur Championship June 4-7, 2009.

All scores to follow.
