TRAVIS WILMORE OF ALEXANDRIA LEADS 2008 LGA JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND

Alexandria’s Travis Wilmore fired an even-par 72 on Thursday to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the 2008 Louisiana Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship. Wilmore stands at three-over par 147 after 36 holes. Evans Haile of Mandeville is alone in second place at 148 after a pair of 74s, with four players tied for third, two shots back. Taylor Netherton of Shreveport, who shot the day’s best round of one-under par 71, Sterlington’s Tanner McDonald, Daniel DeLoach of Boyce, and first round leader Peyton Vitter of New Orleans all stand at five-over 149.

Wilmore played consistent golf on Thursday, firing 16 pars with a birdie on the par five 3^rd, and a bogey on #14. Vitter, who held a three-shot lead entering play on Thursday, struggled with bogeys on three of his first five holes and finished with nines of 39/39 to shot 78.

Also within striking distance at seven-over-par 151 are Hunter Smith of Baton Rouge and Paul Broussard of Lake Charles.

This year’s Championship is being played at Santa Maria Golf Club in Baton Rouge.  Thursday’s play was delayed for an hour and a half just before Noon as lightning storms again skirted the course. Conditions were hot and humid for this field of the best Junior players in the state.  The Santa Maria course is playing to a par of 72 at approximately 6,700 yards for the Championship.

In addition to the Overall Junior Amateur Championship, the LGA also conducted Age-Group Championships, which completed play on Thursday.
