TRAVIS WILMORE WINS 2008 LGA JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

July 11, 2008        Baton Rouge, LA

Travis Wilmore fired the low round of the day on Friday to win the 2008 Louisiana Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship by three shots over Peyton Vitter of New Orleans.

The 16-year-old Wilmore got off to a great start with birdies on #3 and #4 while Vitter, playing one group in front, bogeyed #4, #5, and #6. Wilmore turned in one-under 35, while Vitter ran off a string of birdies on #7, #8, and #9 to shoot even par 36 on the front and put some pressure on Wilmore heading into the back nine.

A consistent inward nine of seven pars, a bogey on #12 and a birdie on #14 brought Wilmore home in one-under par 71, three shots clear of Vitter who finished his third round at even par 72. Wilmore finished 54 holes at two-over par 218 while Vitter finished at 221.

Taylor Netherton of Shreveport finished alone in third at 225 after a round of 76 on Friday. Finishing tied for fourth at 226 were Tanner McDonald of Sterlington and Evans Haile of Mandeville.

Wilmore joins Hal Sutton and David Toms as LGA Junior Amateur Champions by winning the 51st edition of the most prestigious Junior Championship in the state. The remainder of the Top Ten included: Ethan Savoy/Broussard – 227, Daniel DeLoach/Boyce – 227, Bo Boudreaux/Broussard – 228, Paul Broussard/Lake Charles – 228, Hunter Smith/Baton Rouge – 229

Winners of the first and second flights in the overall championship were: 1st Flight – Jordan Karam of Lake Charles/231, 2nd Flight – Timothy Wilson of Shreveport/238.

This year’s Championship was played at Santa Maria Golf Club in Baton Rouge.  Conditions were again hot and humid for this field of the best Junior players in the state. The Santa Maria course played to a par of 72 at approximately 6,700 yards on Friday. The 2009 LGA Junior Championship will be held at Alexandria Golf & Country Club.
