PEYTON VITTER SHOOTS 71 TO LEAD 2008 LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER FIRST ROUND

July 9, 2008 - - Baton Rouge, LA

Peyton Vitter of New Orleans shot a one-under par 71 on Wednesday to lead by three shots after first round play in the 51st Louisiana Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship. Vitter, only 15 years old and a sophomore-to-be when school starts this fall, also led after 18 holes last year at this Championship. On a hot, humid day at Santa Maria Golf Club in Baton Rouge, Vitter was the only player to break par.

Daniel Deloach of Boyce, Evans Haile of Mandeville, and William Dearmon of Winnfield all shot two-over 74s and finished in a tie for second place heading into Thursday’s second round. Finishing in a tie for fifth at 75 was a large contingent, including Luke David of Cut Off, Scott Sweeney of Lake Charles, Myles Lewis of Metairie, Landon Lyons of Baton Rouge, Tanner McDonald of Sterlington, Paul Broussard of Lake Charles, and Travis Wilmore of Alexandria.

Thursday’s play will again begin at 7:30 a.m. off both #1 and #10, with the Overall Championship participants all going off in the morning.  The leaders will go off the first hole at 8:51 a.m.  Age-Group participants will complete play on Thursday with awards being presented upon completion of play Thursday afternoon.

This year’s Championship is being played at Santa Maria Golf Club in Baton Rouge.  Wednesday’s play was conducted under hot and humid conditions, with a one hour delay for a thunderstorm in the afternoon.  The Santa Maria course is playing to a par of 72 at approximately 6,700 yards for the Championship. Former Champions of this event include Hal Sutton, David Toms, and Willie Wood.
