HARP/LAVIGNE, SHELTON/THIBEAUX, & HAYNIE/SCHROEDER TEAMS TIED FOR LEAD AFTER FIRST ROUND AT 2008 LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Lake Charles, Louisiana                        September 20, 2008

2003 Champions Sid Harp of Donaldsonville and Sam Lavigne of Gonzales shot a six-under par round of 66 on Saturday to share the first round lead with 2005 Champion Robert Shelton and his partner Ben Thibeaux, both of Lafayette, and Scott Haynie and Frank Schroeder of Baton Rouge in the 2008 Louisiana Golf Association Senior 4-Ball Championship.

Lavigne carded birdies on Holes 6, 7, 9, 17, and 18, with Harp contributing with a birdie on #10 along with numerous par saves to fashion their 66. Shelton made birdies on Holes 2, 7, 9, 10, and 11, with teammate Thibeaux making his on #3 and #17. Their only blemish/bogey came on the short par four (304 yards) 8th hole. The Baton Rouge duo of Haynie and Schroeder also played a bogeyless round, with Haynie making eagle three on the par five 7th, along with birdies on #6 and #9, while Schroeder birdied #8 and #16.

Defending Champions Wiley Conn of Mandeville and Darell Benoit of Belle Chasse find themselves tied for fourth with Dennis Smith and Brad Mosing of Lafayette after shooting five-under par 67s.

In addition to the Overall Championship, Age-Group Championships are also being conducted for ages 60-64 and 65-69. In the 60-64 Age Group, Mark Tolson of Lafayette and Henry Cole of Monroe lead Lew Ward and Russ Gaudin of Baton Rouge by one shot, the Tolson/Cole team shooting a two-under par 70, with the Ward/Gaudin duo firing a one-under 71.

Reed Fontenot and Phil Kramer of Lake Charles are tied for the lead with Don Scott and Dearel Darbonne, also of Lake Charles, after firing identical rounds of 75 on Saturday in the 65-69 Age Group.

This year’s Championship is being held at Lake Charles Country Club less than a week after Hurricane Ike blew through the area. The golf course is in wonderful condition and is drawing rave reviews from this field of the top Senior players in the state. For this Championship the course is playing at just over 6,600 yards to a par of 72.
