MONROE’S BOB COOPER LEADS WIRE-TO-WIRE TO CLAIM 2007 LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Springfield, Louisiana                August 18, 2007

Monroe’s Bob Cooper never trailed from Day One in winning the 2007 Louisiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship on Saturday at Carter Plantation. Cooper led by four shots heading into Saturday’s final round of play and was never challenged, shooting a conservative final round one-over par 73. With a 54-hole total of two-under par 214, he led this field of the best Senior players in Louisiana from start to finish. Cooper captured the title in his first year of eligibility for this Championship for the best players over 50 years of age in the state. No one was able to take a real run at Cooper as he maintained at least a four shot lead throughout the day. Finishing alone in second was Jim Adams of Baton Rouge, shooting an even par 72 on Saturday to finish at two-over par 218. Shreveport’s Hal Wright also shot even par 72 on Saturday to finish at four-over 220 in 3rd place, with Doug Farr finishing fourth at 74/221. Rounding out the top five was a logjam of no less than seven players. Donaldsonville’s Sid Harp, Monroe’s Roy Holloway, Lafayette’s Robert Shelton, Bill Land, and John Davis, LaPlace’s Vernon St. Amant, and Belle Chasse’s Darrel Benoit all finished at seven-over par 223.

Cooper, playing conservatively in protecting his four shot lead beginning the day, three putted the par three fifth hole for bogey, but made birdie three on the 9th to turn in even par 36.  A bogey on #13 followed by a birdie on #14 kept him at even on the day, while a finishing bogey on #17 brought him in at 73, four shots clear of the field

The low round of the day was shot by Lafayette’s Brad Mosing, a one-under par 71.

This year’s Championship was conducted at Carter Plantation, a David Toms design in Springfield, just southwest of Hammond. The course, which also hosted last year’s LGA Senior 4-Ball Championship, continued to draw accolades from this field of the top Senior players in Louisiana. Saturday’s round was again played in hot and humid conditions.  The field was cut to the low 60 and ties after 36 holes with 64 players making the cut at 166.

Carter Plantation will also host the 2008 LGA Four-Ball Championship next July.
