MONROE’S BOB COOPER LEADS AFTER FIRST ROUND AT 2007 LGA SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
 
Springfield, Louisiana                August 16, 2007
 
First-year Senior Bob Cooper of Monroe shot a 2-under par 70 on Thursday to take the lead heading into second round play at the 18th edition of the Louisiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship. Cooper, who started on #10, had bookend rounds of one-under par 35 to lead Jim Adams of Baton Rouge and Bill Land of Lafayette by one shot. Sid Harp of Donaldsonville and Hal Wright of Shreveport were one more shot back at even par 72. Roy Holloway of Monroe is alone in 6th place with a one-over 73, with four players rounding out the Top Ten tied for seventh (Jim Lipe/Shreveport, A.L. Taylor/Lafayette, Robert Shelton/Lafayette, and David Duhon/Lafayette). Defending Champion John Davis of Lafayette struggled to a four-over 76 and stands in a tie for 16th with 2005 Champion Darell Benoit of Belle Chasse.
 
This year’s Championship is being held at Carter Plantation, a David Toms design in Springfield, just southwest of Hammond. The course drew accolades from this field of the top Senior (50 & Over) players in Louisiana. Thursday’s play was conducted under hot conditions, with the afternoon players having to negotiate swirling winds that made club selection difficult. The field will be cut to the low 60 and ties after Friday’s play. Play will begin at 7:15 AM again on Friday off both #1 and #10 tees. The leaders are scheduled to go off at 1:12 PM on #1 tee.
 
The LGA is also conducting Age Group Championships the first two days over 36 holes. See below for leaders in the Age Group Championships after 18 holes:
