BRETT BERGERON AND NAT BHANTHUMACHINDA TAKE HOME TITLE AT LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION 4-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

July 22, 2007 Baton Rouge, LA

The scores were not quite as low on Sunday as they had been on Saturday but Brett Bergeron of LaPlace and Nat Bhanthumachinda of Harvey shot one just low enough to take home the first place trophy at the 2007 Louisiana Golf Association 4-Ball Championship. Firing a second consecutive round of nine-under par 63, they outdistanced the teams of Thomas Galloway of Covington/Brent Struthers of Baton Rouge and Garrett Prather/Jeff Riemann of Baton Rouge by three shots at the University Club in Baton Rouge. Bergeron and Bhanthumachinda finished at 18-under par 126, with their bookend pair of 63s.

Their round started with birdies on #2, #3, #4, #6, and #7 to turn at five-under 31. Five consecutive pars on holes 8-12 brought a number of teams back into the fray, but then birdies on #13, #14, #16, and #17 paved the way for the three shot victory.

Galloway and Struthers fired the day’s second low round, a bogey-free eight-under par 64 to move from a tie for 8^th after 18 holes into a tie for the runner-up spot at 15-under par 129. Prather and Riemann shot 64/65 for their 129 total. Rounding out the Top Five teams were: first round co-leaders Bob Cooper and Eric Lavespere of Monroe in 4^th place alone at 63/67-130, and Jared Harris/Billy Jackson of Baton Rouge and Scott Sterbcow/Metairie and Darell Benoit/Belle Chasse in a tie for 5^th, both teams shooting identical scores of 64/67-131.

The Jim Lipe designed University Club track was in great condition for this field of the top players in the state. It played to a par of 72 on Sunday at just over 7,000 yards. The course played a bit more difficult on Sunday with a swirling wind and hole locations that were a tad more stingy than on Saturday.
