AUSTIN GUTSGELL WINS 2007 LGA JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 29, 2007      Zachary, LA           Austin Gutsgell of Mandeville ran off and hid from the remainder of the field in the 2007 Louisiana Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship at Beaver Creek Golf Club in Zachary.  With no one else mounting a significant charge, Gutsgell distanced himself from the rest of the field by shooting a 2-under-par 34 on the front nine and coasted to the title in the 50th edition of the most prestigious Junior Championship in the state. He finished the day with a bogey free 3-under-par 69 on Friday. Joining the likes of David Toms and Hal Sutton as LGA Junior Champions, Gutsgell fired a 54-hole total of 205 11-under-par to win by 6 shots over Myles Lewis of Metairie with a score of 211. The remainder of the Top Ten included: Andrew Noto / Luling – 212, Peyton Vitter / New Orleans – 214, Cody Santone / Haughton – 215, Ryan Linder / Homer – 216, Tommy Garitty / Baton Rouge – 219, Andy Jones / West Monroe – 219, Taylor Netherton / Shreveport – 220, Denver Green / Bossier City – 222, Evans Haile / Mandeville – 222.

Other scores of par or better on Friday included: Andrew Noto of Luling/70, Denver Green of Bossier City/71, Ben Suarez of Sulphur/71, Tanner Boose of Shreveport/71, and Peyton Vitter of New Orleans/72.

Winners of the first and second flights in the overall championship were: 1st Flight – Denver Green of Bossier City / 222, 2nd Flight – Malloy Maulis of Lafayette / 233.

This year’s Championship is being played at Beaver Creek Golf Club just north of Baton Rouge.  Beaver Creek also hosted this Championship in 2005.  Conditions were again hot and humid, although a slight breeze that kicked up around mid-morning made club selection somewhat challenging for this field of the best Junior players in the state.  The Beaver Creek course is played to a par of 72 at approximately 6,800 yards on Friday. The 2008 LGA Junior Championship will again be held in the Baton Rouge area with the Robert Trent Jones, Sr., designed Santa Maria Golf Club serving as host venue.
