MANDEVILLE’S AUSTIN GUTGSELL LEADS 2007 LGA JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND

June 28, 2007      Zachary, LA           Austin Gutsgell of Mandeville broke 70 for the second consecutive day to take the 36 hole lead in the 50th Louisiana Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship.  Thursday’s three-under-par 69, following on the heels of his 67 on Wednesday, gives the 17-year-old a two shot lead heading into Friday’s final round of play. Fourteen-year-old Myles Lewis of Metairie survived his first tee shot of the day bouncing out-of-bounds to shoot a two-under par 70 on Thursday and stay within two shots of Gutsgell. It became a battle royale on the back nine for the two leaders as both fired 4-under par scores of 32 to finish their rounds. Tied for third are last year’s runner-up Andrew Noto of Luling and Peyton Vitter of New Orleans at two-under-par 142. Noto had a 73 on Thursday while first round co-leader Vitter struggled to a 75.

Also within striking distance at one-under-par 143 are defending champion Cody Santone of Bossier City, Andy Jones of West Monroe, and Ryan Linder of Homer. Santone had an even par 72 on Thursday, while Jones had one of the few under par scores with a two-under-par 70, and Linder shot a one-over 73.

Other scores of par or better on Thursday included: Jason Noto of Luling/70, Michael Lauseng of Bossier City/70, Taylor Netherton of Shreveport/71, and Trey Neck of Baton Rouge/72.

Friday’s play will again begin at 7:30 AM off both #1 and #10. The leaders will go off the #1 tee at 9:00 AM
This year’s Championship is being played at Beaver Creek Golf Club in the Baton Rouge suburb of Zachary.  Beaver Creek also hosted this Championship in 2005.  Thursday’s play was delayed for just over two hours at 1 PM and then again for another hour later in the afternoon as lightning storms skirted the course. Conditions were again hot and humid for this field of the best Junior players in the state.  The Beaver Creek course is playing to a par of 72 at approximately 6,750 yards for the Championship.

In addition to the Overall Junior Amateur Championship, the LGA also conducted Age-Group Championships, which completed play on Thursday.
