LOGJAM AT TOP AFTER FIRST ROUND OF PLAY IN LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR 4-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Patterson, Louisiana                      September 15, 2007
Local players Glenn Jumonville and Jeff Johnson of Patterson, Sam Lavigne of Gonzales and Sid Harp of Donaldsonville, and Lew Ward and Scott Rabenhorst of Baton Rouge all fired  seven-under par 65s on Saturday to tie for the first round lead in the Louisiana Golf Association Senior 4-Ball Championship at Atchafalaya GC at Idlewild in Patterson.  Jumonville and Johnson went off in the third group of the day and posted their 65 early for everyone else to shoot at.  They got off to a quick start with birdies on two of their first three holes, made their lone bogey of the day on the par five 6th, then finished their front nine with birdies on #8 and #9 to turn in three-under par 33. Birdies on #10, #12, #13, and #17 brought them home in 32.  Lavigne and Harp’s round was highlighted by Harp’s eagle two on the par four 8th hole.  Birdies on #10, #11, and #13 got them to seven-under par early on their back nine, but they couldn’t go any lower, making pars on holes #14-#18 to complete their 65.  Ward and Rabenhorst also got off to a quick start with birdies on #1, #4, and #5, turning in 3-under 33. They birdied #11 and #13, then finished strong with birdies on #17 and #18 to card their 65.
No less than five teams are tied for fourth, one shot back, entering Sunday’s final round of play.  Shooting rounds of six-under par 66 are the teams of Wiley Conn, Mandeville/Darell Benoit, Belle Chasse; John Davis, Lafayette/Bill Land, Lafayette;  Dennis Hurley, Marrero/Mac Blanchard, Lake Charles; Defending Champions Johnny Futch, Monroe/Glenn Roscoe, West Monroe; and 2005 Champions Robert Shelton and Jimmy Thomas of Lafayette. Shelton and Thomas fired a seven-under par 29 on the back nine, birdieing  #10, #12, #13, #14, and #18, with an eagle three by Shelton on #16.
Play will get under way on Sunday at 7:30 AM with the final group scheduled to start at 10:10 AM.
This year’s Championship is being conducted at the Audubon Golf Trail’s Atchafalaya Golf Club at Idlewild facility just north of Morgan City in Patterson. The Robert von Hagge design has drawn rave reviews from this field of the top Senior players in the state. The course has been inundated with rain over the last 30 days but is in wonderful condition in spite of the wet weather. The track, which can be stretched out to over 7,500 yards, is playing to a par of 72 at just over 6,500 yards for this Championship. The Atchafalaya GC will also host the first LGA event of 2008 as well, the Club Team Championship, enabling the club to hold the distinction of hosting the final LGA event of 2007 and the first LGA event of 2008
The LGA is also conducting Age Group Championships in this event. Age Group leaders after first round play are as follows:
