PRESS RELEASE JEFF CALLOWAY AND KENLEY JONES FIRE AN OPENING ROUND 10-UNDER PAR 62 TO LEAD THE 2006 THE LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP July 22, 2006 -- Jeff Calloway of Baker and Kenley Jones of Lafayette sit atop the leaderboard after combining to shoot an opening round 10-under par 62 on Saturday at the 23rd annual Louisiana Golf Association Four-Ball Championship at Ellendale Country Club. The team of Calloway/Jones carded 11 birdies against one bogey to take a one-shot lead going into Sunday’s final round. After starting their round with an opening bogey at #10, Calloway/Jones rolled in birdies at #11, 14, 16, and 17 to turn in three-under par 33. They continued their strong play on their second nine with birdies at #1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 to come in at seven-under par 29 and a round of 62. One shot back of the leaders is Covington's Tommy Brennan and Baton Rouge's Gayle Sanchez. Also starting on the tenth hole, Brennan/Sanchez made birdies at #12, 16, and 17 to go out in 33. After a birdie at #1 and pars on #2-4, the pair ran off five consecutive birdies at #5-9 to cap off a back nine score of 30 and a round of 63. In third place after day one are the 1999 and 2000 Champions, John Davis and Bill Land of Lafayette. Davis/Land birdied their first two holes of the day (#1 and 2) and made two more birdies (#7 and 8) and a bogey (#3) on the front side to shoot a three-under par 33. Birdies at #10, 12, 13, 15, and 17 helped them close with a five-under par 31 on the back nine. They shot eight-under par 64 on the day. Rounding out the top-ten after the first round are: Scott Haynie/John Henchy (T-4, 66), Brett Casey/Gavin Johnson (66), Scott Rabenhorst/Lew Ward (T-4, 66), Dennis Brown/Larry Daigle (T-4, 66), Dustin Mire/Kristopher Novak (T-8, 67), Brett Bergeron/Vernon St. Amant (T-8, 67), Byron May/Lewis Sams (T-10, 68), Bret Cuneo/Carey Spence (T-10, 68), and David Duhon/James Hamilton (T-10, 68). This year’s Championship is being held at Ellendale Country Club in Houma, Louisiana. The course, which has under gone renovations in since it last hosted this event in 1994, has received rave reviews this week from the best amateur players in the state. The course is being played at 7,000 yards for the Championship. Play will begin off the first and tenth tees on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. The leaders will start their round on the first tee at 8:50 a.m. | |
