ROBERT SHELTON AND JIMMY THOMAS OF LAFAYETTE TAKE FIRST ROUND LEAD AT THE 2006 LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Springfield, Louisiana -- Robert Shelton and Jimmy Thomas of Lafayette sit atop the leaderboard after combining to shoot an opening round six-under par 66 on Friday at the 19th Louisiana Golf Association Senior Four-Ball Championship at Carter Plantation.
The team of Shelton/Thomas, who captured the 2005 LGA Senior Four-Ball at Gray Plantation, carded six birdies against no bogeys to take a two-shot lead going into Saturday’s final round.
Five teams find themselves in second place after shooting opening rounds of four-under par 68 including: Chip Houston/Jim Whitten, Bill Kallam/Ben Thibeaux, Johnny Futch/Glenn Roscoe, John Davis/Jim Fatheree, and Jim Lipe/Eddie Lyons.
Three shots back are the runners-up from the 2004 Championship, Henry Cole and Mark Tolson, who opened with a three-under par score of 69. Mike Scurria/Robert Patt and Randy McGee/Todd Lusk are also three shots back after firing opening round 69s.
Rounding out the top-ten with a score of two-under par are the teams of Dale Cagnolatti/Frank Maxwell, A.L. Taylor/Jay Bellamy, and Doug Farr/Paul Farr.
In addition to competing in the Overall Championship, players that fall into the 60-64 and 65-69 Age Groups compete concurrently in an Age Group Championship. In the 60-64 Age Group, Todd Lusk and Randy McGee hold a two-shot lead after shooting three-under par on the day. Curt McClure and Corky Yates, the 65-69 Age Group Champions from a year ago, shot an opening round 74 to lead the 65-69 Age Group Championship.
This year’s Championship is being held at Carter Plantation, which is the home to PGA Champion and Louisiana native David Toms’ first signature design. The course, which opened in 2003, has been featured as part of Golf Magazine’s “Top Ten Courses You Can Play.” The course is being played at 6,770 yards for the Championship.
