ROBERT SHELTON AND JIMMY THOMAS OF LAFAYETTE LEAD AFTER THE FIRST ROUND OF THE LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR FOUR-BALL AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
 
Lake Charles, Louisiana                        May 8, 2004
 
Robert Shelton and Jimmy Thomas of Lafayette combined to shoot an opening round best nine-under par 63 on Friday to take a one-shot lead at the 18th Louisiana Golf Association Senior Four-Ball Championship at Gray Plantation in Lake Charles.
 
After finishing their round with birdies on seven of the final twelve holes, the Shelton/Thomas team find themselves one shot clear of Eddie Lyons and Jim Lipe of Shreveport who opened the championship with an eight-under par 64.
 
Three shots back are the runners-up from the 2004 Championship, Henry Cole and Mark Tolson, who opened with a six-under par score of 66.  Brad Mosing and Dennis Smith of Lafayette also find themselves three shots back after a first round 66.
 
Three teams are four shots back and tied for fifth after shooting opening rounds of 67 including: Wiley Conn/John Muse, 2003 Champions Sid Harp/Sam Lavigne, and Scott Rabenhorst/Lew Ward.
 
In addition to the Overall Championship, some players compete in various Age Group Championships.  Player’s in the 60-64 and 65-69 Age Groups compete concurrently in their Age Group Championship and the Overall Championship while the 70 and Over Age Group plays from forward tees and competes only in their Age Group Championship.
 
Defending Champions Curt McClure and Corky Yates shot an opening round 69 to lead the 65-69 Age Group Championship.  In the 60-64 Age Group, Russ Gaudin/R.E. McKey and Charlie Kennon/Dickey Myer are tied after shooting one-under par 71s.  Clyde Albritton and John Smith of Calhoun sit atop the 70 and Over Age Group. 
 
This year’s Championship is being held at the Rocky Roquemore designed Gray Plantation in Lake Charles.  The course, which was recently rated in the top ten in the state by Golf Digest, opened for play in 1999.  The course is being played at 6850 yards for the Championship.
