THE UNIVERSITY CLUB OF BATON ROUGE RUNS AWAY FROM THE FIELD TO TAKE A NINE SHOT VICTORY IN THE 2005 LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION CLUB TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
April 24, 2005 Zachary, Louisiana
Starting the day with a three shot lead, The University Club of Baton Rouge never looked back en route to a nine shot victory in the 2005 Louisiana Golf Association Club Team Championship.
The team was paced by Scott Haynie and Jeff Calloway who each shot rounds of four-under par 68. Kevin Gros completed play with a two-under par 70, and Scott Freeland rounded out the scoring with a 73. Other members of the championship team were John Henchy and Mike Scurria. The University Club continued their stellar play on Sunday after shooting 18-under par in four-ball play on Saturday. This is the first Club Team title for The University Club.
Finishing the championship at 18-under par and in second place were the 2003 Champions, Acadian Hills Country Club of Lafayette. John Davis shot the low round of the day with a round of six-under par 66. Chad Massie and Todd Webber both finished the day under par with a 70 and 71 respectively. Larry Aillet shot a one-over par 73. Other members of the Acadian Hills squad included Wayne Patin and Chris Kremheller.
St. Mary Golf and Country Club of Morgan City finished in alone in third place at 16-under par for the championship. Members of the St. Mary team included Tillman Simmons, Jeff Leleux, Calvin Leleux, Jim Parvino, Chris Bertaut, and Mike Kapp.
The highlight of the day occurred on the par-3 sixth hole where Ken Myers of Squire Creek Country Club in Ruston made a hole-in-one. Myers hit a 7-iron on the 163-yard hole to record the first ace of his career.
The 17th edition of the Championship drew 28 teams from across the state of Louisiana. Clubs participating in the event are represented by six-man teams. Saturday’s play consisted of four-ball stroke play with each team counting the two best of their three four-ball scores. Sunday’s play consisted of individual stroke play with a team’s score being determined by the best four of six individual scores.
The 2005 LGA Club Team Championship was conducted at Copper Mill Golf Club, a Crace/Maxwell designed facility just north of Baton Rouge in Zachary. Featuring a layout of six par-5s, six par-4s, and six par 3s, the Par 72 course measures just over 6800 yards. Copper Mill will host the event again in 2006.
