April 23, 2004 Zachary, Louisiana
Taking advantage of calm early-morning wind conditions, The University Club of Baton Rouge posted two rounds of 63 to finish the first round of the Louisiana Golf Association Club Team Championship at 18-under par. In a format where a team counts two of their three four-ball scores in the first round, the University Club didn’t even use a third score of 66.

The tandum of Chris Bertaut/Mike Kapp paced the team with a nine-under par 63. Jeff Leleux/Tillman Simmons shot a six-under par 66 and Calvin Leleux/Jim Parvino shot an even-par 72. The host club, Copper Mill Golf Club #1 played their way through the blustery afternoon conditions and find themselves only four shots back of the leaders entering the final round. Copper Mill was led by the teams of Jason Albritton/Tommy Langlois and Scottie Southall/Trampus Butler, who both shot rounds of seven-under 65. Tom Agazzi and Mac Watts finished with one more shot at 66. Defending Champions Pelican Point Golf Club, Gonzales, shot six-under par for the day.
Clubs participating in the 17th LGA Club Team Championship are represented by six-man teams. Saturday’s play consists of four-ball stroke play with each team counting the two best of their three four-ball scores. Sunday’s play consists of individual stroke play with a team’s score being determined by counting the best four of six individual scores. With the number of scores being counted on Sunday doubling those counted on Saturday, no first round lead is insurmountable.
The Championship is being conducted at the Crace/Maxwell designed Copper Mill Golf Club in Zachary. Featuring a layout of six Par-5 holes, six Par-4 holes, and six Par 3 holes, the Par 72 course measures just over 6800 yards.
