For Release: Upon Receipt Contact: Carr McCalla BRASHER AND SHELTON LAP FIELD TO TAKE LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION 4-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP Abita Springs, Louisiana September 26, 2004 First round leaders Sandy Brasher of Covington and Robert Shelton of Lafayette did themselves one better on Sunday, shooting a 9-under par 63 to outdistance second place finishers John Davis and Bill Land of Lafayette and Scott Sterbcow of Metairie and Gavin Johnson of Kenner by 6 shots to win the 2004 Louisiana Golf Association 4-Ball Championship on Sunday at Money Hill Golf & Country Club in Abita Springs. Brasher and Shelton, who held a one shot lead after 18 holes, got off to an unbelievable start, making birdies on the first 5 holes Sunday, Brasher making four on the par-5 first hole, then Shelton firing 4 consecutive birdies on Holes #2-#5. A bogey on #6 was their only misstep of the day as they made the turn in 4-under par 32, their third consecutive nine hole round of 32 during the weekend. Birdies by Brasher on #12, #13, #15, and #17 got them to 8-under, then Shelton finished the round off in style, making birdie on the 440 yard par-4 finishing hole. An inward 5-under 31 gave them their 63 for a 36 hole total of 17-under par 127. 1999 and 2000 Champions Land and Davis fired a 67 on Sunday, coupled with Saturday?s 66, enabling them to tie Johnson and Sterbcow for second at 11-under par 133. Johnson and Sterbcow shot 66 on Sunday. Rounding out the Top 5 teams were: Jeff Calloway of Baker and Scottie Southall of Zachary, fourth place at 134. Tying for fifth place at 135 were the teams of Dudley Bienvenu/Lafayette and Will Daigle/Baton Rouge; Mike Morton/Broussard and Ben Wheeler/Baton Rouge; and Henry Cole/Monroe and Mark Tolson/Lafayette. Defending champions Doug Farr/Monroe and Scott Sills/West Monroe finished in a tie for eighth at 8-under par 136 after a round of 66 on Sunday. Other low scores Sunday were turned in by: Johnson and Sterbcow (66), Farr and Sills (66), Davis and Land (67), Calloway and Southall (67), Scott Foreman/Mandeville and John Reynolds/Mandeville (67), Brett Bergeron/LaPlace and Vernon St. Amant/LaPlace (68), Robert Lauve/Shreveport and Bob Raulerson/Monroe (68), Mike Maronge/Baton Rouge and Tommy Toups/Port Allen (68), and Randy Goff/The Bluffs and Mike Scurria/Denham Springs (68). This year?s Championship was conducted at Money Hill Golf & Country Club in Abita Springs, just north of Lake Ponchartrain, annually rated as one of the top courses in the state by Golf Digest. Money Hill will also serve as the host venue for next year?s LGA Amateur Championship in June of 2005. Sunday?s play was blessed with wonderful weather; clear skies with a cooling breeze that picked up as the leaders played the back nine, making club selection difficult. All Scores to follow: | |
