Brasher birdied 4 of the first 5 holes, Shelton finally getting into the action with a birdie on #6 to get them to 5-under par through 6 holes. A bogey on the short par-3 eighth hole and finishing par on #9 gave them a 4-under par 32 on the front. Shelton birdies on #10, #12, and #15, coupled with a Brasher birdie on #14, enabled them to fire another 4-under 32 on the back, giving them a leg up on this field of the best Amateur players in the state. Allen and Martin start right on Brasher and Shelton?s heels Sunday after their 7-under par 65 on Saturday. Allen made birdies on #3, #6, #7 and #8, Martin finishing off a 5-under par frontside of 31 with a birdie on the 437 yard par-4 9th. They picked up where they left off on #10, Allen birdieing the 457 yard par-4. Martin then made eagle 3 on #11, a 537 yard par-5 to get them to 8 under par through eleven holes. ?We got a tad bit out of our comfort zone at that point,? said Martin, as they finished with all pars save for the bogey they made on the par-4 15th. Daigle and Bienvenu, also one shot back entering Sunday?s final round, began their round with Daigle birdies on the first 3 holes, a Bienvenu birdie on #5, then their only bogey of the day at the par-4 tenth. Daigle birdied the par-4 12th, #16 and #18, with Bienvenu chipping in with a birdie on #17 to finish their round with 8 birdies and a lone bogey to fashion their 65. Two shots back heading into Sunday?s final round are: Mike Morton of Broussard and Ben Wheeler of Baton Rouge (66), Henry Cole of Monroe and Mark Tolson of Lafayette (66), and 1999 and 2000 Champions John Davis and Bill Land of Lafayette (66). Rounding out the top finishers after Day 1 were: Jeff Calloway of Baker and Scottie Southall of Zachary (67), Grady Brame of Hammond and Mason Rudolph of Covington (67), Russ Gaudin of St. Francisville and Tony Cascino of Baton Rouge (67), and Gavin Johnson of Kenner and Scott Sterbcow of Metairie (67). Defending Champions Doug Farr of Monroe and Scott Sills of West Monroe finished at 2 under par 70 as did 2002 Champions Ryan Fabre of Brusly and Larry Daigle of Port Allen. This year?s Championship is being conducted at Money Hill Golf & Country Club in Abita Springs, just north of New Orleans, a Ron Garl design honored by Golf Digest as the #1 ranked course in the state. It is playing to a par of 72 at approximately 7,100 yards. Money Hill played host to this Championship in 1999 and the LGA Amateur Championship in 2000. It will again host the LGA?s marquee event, the State Amateur Championship, in 2005. Saturday?s play was conducted under partly cloudy skies and low humidity. A slight breeze kicked up in the early afternoon. Play will begin at 7:30 AM off the first tee on Sunday with the leaders scheduled to tee off at 12:10 PM.
