For Release: Upon Receipt Contact: Carr McCalla FRANK BRAME SHOOTS 71 SATURDAY TO WIN LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Gonzales, Louisiana August 21, 2004 Alexandria?s Frank Brame shot a 1-under par 71 on Saturday to win the 15th Louisiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship at Pelican Point Golf Club in Gonzales, LA. Brame, the 2002 champion, started the day two shots ahead of the defending champion, Eddie Lyons, of Shreveport, and four shots clear of Robert Shelton of Lafayette. Brame finished the outward nine in 1-under par 35 and increased his overall lead to four over Shelton (1-under 35) and six over Lyons (3-over 39). After an eagle-birdie stretch for Shelton on holes 13 and 14 and a Brame bogey on 15, Brame?s lead was cut to two with three holes remaining. However, Shelton?s second shot to the par-5 16th found the water in front of the green resulting in a bogey and a two-shot swing as Brame birdied the hole. From there, Brame was able to finish off his second victory in the event in three years. Shelton ended the day with a 1-under par 71 to finish alone in second place at 5-under par while Lyons finished alone in third place with a final round 74. Pelican Point member, Sam Lavigne, shot an inward nine 3-under par 33 en route to a final round 71 to finish in fourth place. Baton Rouge residents Scott Haynie (74) and Gayle Sanchez (75) finished in a tie for fifth place to round out the top five. With no one breaking 70, other top rounds of the day belonged to: Michael Creighton/Monroe (70), Dennis Smith/Lafayette (70), Mike Anderson/Baton Rouge (70), and Sid Harp/Donaldsonville (71). Saturday?s early play took place under calm but humid conditions and bright sunshine but the wind kicked up as the leaders made the turn, again making club selection difficult. Pelican Point?s Links course played to a par of 72 at approximately 6,800 yards. The course has drawn wonderful reviews from this field of the top Senior players in the state. The venue was in tremendous condition for the Championship. It will also host the 2004 LGA Net Amateur Championship next weekend. All Scores to follow: ### | |
