BRAME HOLDS LEAD IN LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Gonzales, Louisiana August 20, 2004

Alexandria?s Frank Brame, who won this Championship in 2002, shot 1-under par 71 on Friday to maintain his 2 stroke lead over defending champion Eddie Lyons heading into final round play in the 2004 Louisiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship. Brame, who shot 7-under par 65 on Thursday, got off to another quick start Friday, going 2-under on the first 5 holes, but bogeyed #9 to shoot 1-under 35 on the front, then made 9 consecutive pars on the back to card his 71. Lyons who started the day 2 shots back, had an even par 36 on the front with a birdie on #6 and a bogey on #8, and matched Brame?s 71 by firing a 35 on the back, with a bogey on #11 and birdies on #13 and #16.

Robert Shelton of Lafayette had the day?s best score with a 2-under 70 and will be in the final group with Brame and Lyons on Saturday. He is at 4-under 140 after bookend 70s the first two rounds. Other under par scores on Friday were shot by Gonzales? Sam Lavigne (70) and Ben Holcombe of Sulphur (71).

This year?s Championship is being held at the Links course at Pelican Point Golf Club. Play was delayed for 2 hours at 11 AM as a strong rain and thunderstorm swept through the area for the second consecutive day. Afternoon starting times were delayed by 1 hour and 45 minutes with another delay for lightning with 3 groups still on the course at 6:30 PM. Play was finally completed at around 7:15 PM. The course continues to get strong reviews from this field of the best Senior players in Louisiana. It played to a par of 72 at approximately 6,800 yards on Friday.

The field was cut to the low 60 and ties after Friday?s play. The cut fell at 162 with 62 players returning to play on Saturday. Saturday?s play will begin at 7:30 AM with the leaders scheduled to go off at 10:30 AM

Age Group Championships completed play on Friday after 36 holes. Monroe Mitchell of Monroe won the 70 & Over Age Group, shooting his age for the second consecutive day and 119th time, posting a 69-70/139. The 65-69 Age Group was won by Keith Mire of Shreveport with a score of 74-76/150, and the 60-64 Age Group was won by Curt McClure, also of Shreveport, at 74-73/147.
