Brame, who won this Championship at Tamahka Trails Golf Club in Marksville in 2002, shot 4-under 32 on the front side, birdieing #2, #5, #6, and #8. Finishing without a bogey, he had birdies on #12, #16, and the difficult par 4 finishing hole to complete his backside in 33 and lead defending champion Eddie Lyons of Shreveport and first year senior Scott Haynie of Baton Rouge by 2 shots. Lyons, who won this event last year at Gray Plantation in Lake Charles, had eight birdies on Thursday, but a bogey on #9 and double bogey on #10 spoiled what could have been a great round. Haynie played his front in one-under 35, and after a bogey on #10, caught fire, making birdies on #11, #12, #13, #15, and #16, finishing with 2 pars for 32 on the back for his 67. Other rounds at even par or better on Thursday were shot by; Baton Rouge's Gayle Sanchez (69), Lafayette's Robert Shelton (70), Gonzales' Sam Lavigne (72), Francis Richard of Baton Rouge (72), and Baton Rouge's Paul Knight (72). Thursday's play was suspended for 90 minutes at 1:15 PM as a strong thunderstorm hit the area with half the field still on the course. The Links at Pelican Point drew compliments from this field of the best Senior players in the state as many indicated it was in the best condition they could ever remember. The course played to a par of 72 on Thursday at approximately 6,800 yards. Curt McClure of Shreveport leads the 60-64 Age Group after Day 1 after shooting a 1-over par 73 with Steve Valasek of Kenner one shot back. Leading the 65-69 Age Group is Keith Mire of Shreveport at 74, with Bill Williams of Lafayette and Corky Yates of Pineville tied for second at 77. The 70 and over Age Group is led by Monroe Mitchell of Monroe, who shot his age for the 118th time with a 3-under par 69. Baton Rouge's Ellis Michael is in second 3 shots back at even par 72. The 60-64 and 65-69 Age Groups are playing from the same tees as the Overall Championship and are competing concurrently in the Overall Championship. The 70 & Over competitors are playing from forward tees and, consequently, are only competing for their Age Group Championship. The Age Group Championships will complete play tomorrow with the Overall Championship concluding play on Saturday. Play will again begin at 7:30 AM on Friday, off both #1 and #10 tees. The field will be cut to the low 60 and ties after Friday's play. All Scores to follow: | |
