EDDIE LYONS SHOOTS 4-UNDER 68 TO TAKE FIRST ROUND LEAD IN LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Lake Charles, Louisiana August 6, 2004

Eddie Lyons of Shreveport shot a 4-under par 68 on Friday to take a one shot lead into second round play Saturday in the 2004 Louisiana Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship at Gray Plantation in Lake Charles. Lyons, who won last year?s LGA Senior Amateur Championship on this same venue, shot 4-under 32 on the front nine with birdies on #1, #2, #3, and #7. He birdied #10 and #11 to get to 6-under through eleven holes, then bogeyed #13 and #14, made his seventh birdie of the day on #16, and finished the day with a bogey on #18 for his round of 68.

One shot back heading into Saturday?s play are Jeff Calloway of Baker, 33-36/69, Ben Hargis of Alexandria, 34-35/69, and Kenley Jones of New Iberia, 37-32/69. Another shot back at 2-under par 70 are Defending Champion John Davis of Lafayette and Will Daigle of Baton Rouge, with John Carr of Shreveport, Bill Land and Mark Tolson of Lafayette, former Champion Grady Brame of Hammond, Scott Freeland of Baton Rouge, and Sulphur?s Billy Gabbert at 1-under par 71.

This year?s Championship is being played at Gray Plantation, a Rocky Roquemorre design just named again as the #2 ranked course in the state by Golf Digest. The course was hit by a strong thunderstorm late Thursday evening and as a consequence, played longer than usual. Even with the wet course, the field, which consists of the top amateur players over the age of 25 in the state, raved about the condition of the course. It played to a par of 72 over approximately 7,000 yards. Friday?s play was conducted under hot and humid conditions with just a hint of a breeze.

Saturday?s play will begin a 7:30 AM off both #1 and #10 tees with the leaders scheduled to go off #1 at 1:39 PM. The field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties after Saturday?s play.
