BELLE CHASSE'S RANDY GULIUZO TAKES LEAD AFTER 36 HOLES IN LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Shreveport, Louisiana July 1, 2004

Randy Guliuzo of Belle Chasse shot a 3-under par 68 on Thursday to take a one shot lead into final round play in the 2004 LGA Junior Amateur Championship at Shreveport Country Club. Guliuzo, playing in the next to last pairing, birdied the first 3 holes but gave all 3 back with bogeys on #7, #8, and #9, turning in even par 36. He again started great on the back nine with birdies on #10 and #11, also birdieing #16 and #17 with a bogey sandwiched in between at #15, finishing his back nine in 3-under 32 for his 68. Timothy Byrd of LaPlace, playing in the same group with Guliuzo, shot 69 on Thursday to stay within one shot of the lead. Byrd made birdies on #1, #7, and #14, with a lone bogey on the par 4 15th.

First round co-leaders Thomas Galloway of Covington and Matthew Harvey of Monroe stayed in the hunt, Galloway shooting 73 to hold onto 3rd place and Harvey shooting 74 to fill the 4th spot heading into Friday's play. Matthew Hungerman of Mandeville completed the Top 5 with a 2 day total of 144 (74/71). Other first round co-leaders Clayton Broyles of West Monroe and Shane Arnold of Shreveport struggled on Thursday, Broyles finishing with a 78 and Arnold with an 85.

Friday's play will begin at 7:30 a.m., off both #1 and #10 tees, with the leaders starting at 9:10 a.m. off the first tee. Age Group divisions completed their play on Thursday with awards being presented upon completion of play Thursday afternoon.

This year's Championship is being played at Shreveport Country Club. The course has been inundated with rain for most of the past month, including heavy rainfall last weekend. Lift, clean, and place rules were in effect Wednesday, the first time the LGA has been forced to play with those rules in effect in over three years. Thursday's morning rounds were conducted under overcast skies with occasional light showers during play. Afternoon play benefited from clearing skies with play being completed around 6 p.m. The Shreveport CC course played to a par of 71 at approximately 6,500 yards for this event.
