For Release: Upon Receipt Contact: Carr McCalla THOMAS GALLOWAY BIRDIES LAST 3 HOLES THEN TAKES PLAYOFF TO WIN LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Shreveport, Louisiana July 2, 2004 Thomas Galloway of Covington birdied #16, #17, and #18, then made par on the first playoff hole to edge second round leader Randy Guliuzo of Belle Chasse and win the 47th edition of the 2004 LGA Junior Amateur Championship at Shreveport Country Club. Galloway, in the final pairing of the day with Guliuzo, was four shots back with 3 holes to play. His birdie, coupled with a bogey by Guliuzo on #16, brought him within 2 shots, then birdies on the final 2 holes enabled him to catch Guliuzo, who made par on #17 and #18. A 3 wood off the tee, 9 iron into the green, and 2 putts on the first playoff hole was enough to capture the crown, as Guliuzo hit his drive through the fairway, his second into a greenside bunker, and couldn't get up and down for par. Galloway had rounds of 70/73/71, while Guliuzo shot 71/68/75, to each finish 54 holes at 1-over par 214. Matt Hungerman of Mandeville shot even par 71 on Friday, to finish third alone at 3-over par 216. Timothy Byrd of LaPlace finished in fourth at 217, with Petey Smith of Lafayette and Matthew Harvey of Monroe finishing in a tie for fifth at 218. Smith had the low round of the day at 1-under par 70. This year's Championship was played at Shreveport Country Club, one of the oldest courses in the state and host to numerous Louisiana Golf Association Championships in years past. The course has been saturated as a result of storms for most of the past month, including heavy rainfall this past weekend. Lift, clean, and place rules have been in effect for this Championship, the first time the LGA has been forced to play with those rules in effect in over three years. Friday's play was conducted under partly cloudy skies, with bright sunshine peeking through on occasion, the first day the sun has been seen all week. The Shreveport CC course played to a par of 71 at approximately 6,500 yards for this event. All scores to follow: ### | |
