Alexandria, Louisiana May 7, 2004

Corky Yates of Pineville and Curt McClure of Shreveport shot a 9-under par 63 on Friday to take the first round lead in the Louisiana Golf Association Senior 4-Ball Championship at OakWing Golf Club in Alexandria. Yates birdied the first hole, McClure the second, third, and sixth, with Yates finishing up the front nine with a birdie on the par 5 ninth to make the turn in 5-under par 31. Yates made birdie on #10, #16, and #17, with McClure making 3 on the difficult par 4 13th to finish off their 63. In second place alone at 8-under par 64 are Lafayette's Robert Shelton and Jimmy Thomas. Tied for third place at 7-under par 65 are Ville Platte's Henry Dupre' and Todd Lemoine and Baton Rouge's Lew Ward and Randy McGee.

Tied for fifth at 6-under 66 are the teams of: Todd Lusk/Baton Rouge and Ronnie Melancon/The Bluffs; Henry Cole/Monroe and Mark Tolson/Lafayette; Charlie Kennon and Dicky Myer of Baton Rouge; and Paul Castro/Baton Rouge and Malcolm Dugas/Donaldsonville.

2002 Champions Monroe Mitchell of Monroe and Van Lee of Bastrop shot 4-under 68 while 2000 and 2001 Champions Jay and Jim Pierson of Shreveport and Natchitoches, respectively, shot 3-under par 69.

Yates and McClure also lead the 60-64 Age Group Championship, with Kennon and Myer alone in second. In the 65-69 Age Group Championship Gordon Conn and Ron Guidry of Baton Rouge lead at 2-under par 70, with Sammy Love and Phil Markham of Shreveport in second at 76. In the 70 & Over Age Group John Peters and Don Savoie of LaPlace shot 70 to lead with Oliver Wingfield of Jackson and Jim Pecoraro of Zachary one shot back.

Friday's play began with a 10 minute fog delay with the first group in the middle of the first fairway. The sun burned the fog off quickly and gave way to a beautiful day, sunny skies with just a hint of a breeze. The OakWing course, open only a year and a half, is a Jim Lipe design, and is drawing good reviews from this field of the best Senior players in the state. The course played to a par of 72 on Thursday at approximately 6,600 yards.

The 60-64 and 65-69 Age Groups compete concurrently in their Age Group Championship and the Overall Championship while the 70 & Over Age Group plays from forward tees and competes only in their Age Group event.
