Pelican Point Golf Club leads after first round of Louisiana Golf Association Club Team Championship

April 24, 2004 Kinder, Louisiana

Mother Nature was the big winner during first round play at the 2004 Louisiana Golf Association Club Team Championship at Koasati Pines at Coushatta GC in Kinder. Play was suspended for over 3 hours in the early afternoon as a strong lightning and rain storm surged through the area and then was called for darkness with 4 groups still on the course at around 8 PM. Play was suspended at 1:20 PM and resumed at 4:25 PM. Pelican Point's #1 team (who went off in the first three groups of the day) shot scores of 65, 66, and 66, to lead after the first round of play. Their 13-under par 131 leads defending champion Acadian Hills CC of Lafayette by 4 shots going into Sunday's final round of play.

Pelican Point, from Gonzales, was led by Mark Bridges and Paul Castro with a 7-under par 65. The teams of Terrell Bourgeois/Dennis Brown and Sid Harp/Sam Lavigne, both shot 6-under par 66s. Acadian Hills, who won this Championship in 2003 at Tamahka Trails GC in Marksville, was led by Larry Aillet and John Davis' 67. Wayne Patin and Todd Weber shot 68, and Chad Massie and Dalton Boutin had 70, for their team total of 9-under par 135. Alexandria's OakWing GC was another shot back at 136

Saturday's play consisted of 4-Ball stroke play with each team counting two of their three 4-Ball scores. Teams still left on the course will return at 7 AM Sunday morning to complete their first round. The second round will also start at 7 AM with groups playing at the same time on Sunday as they did on Saturday.

Other strong scores for the day were turned in by OakWing's Trey Coker and Ryan Kinder (67) and Oakbourne's Kevin Gayle and Mark Tolson (68).

Sunday's play will be individual stroke play with a team's score being determined by counting the best 4 of 6 scores, so Sunday's play will be twice as important as Saturday's as 4 scores count as opposed to 2 for Saturday.

The Championship is being conducted at the Kevin Tucker designed Koasti Pines at Coushatta GC course in Kinder, which played to a par of 72 over approximately 6,950 yards.
