 ROD BARONET WINS LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Baton Rouge, Louisiana                        August 20, 2011

Rod Baronet of LeCompte captured the 2011 Louisiana Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship on Saturday, fending off the hard-charging Tommy Brennan of Covington by three shots with a final round one-over par 73.  He finished at four-under 212, with Brennan’s final round four-under par 68 bringing him in at one-under 215. 

Heading into the day eight shots clear of the field, he increased his lead to nine with a birdie on the first hole but by the end of the front nine Brennen had closed the lead to five, having made birdies on holes #2, #8, and #9.  Baronet birdied the sixth, but bogeys on #7 and #9 set the stage for an interesting back nine.

Brennan birdied the short par four 12^thto get within four, but Baronet got that shot back with a birdie of his own on #13.  After exchanging bogeys on #14 and pars on #15, Brennan went par/birdie on #16 and #17 to pick up two more shots as Baronet went bogey/par.  That cut the lead to three and when they both parred the par four 18^th, Baronet had his first Senior Amateur title.

Finishing alone in third after consecutive rounds of 71 the last two days was Gayle Sanchez of Baton Rouge (220).  Fourth place went to defending Champion Bob Cooper of Monroe (221), with Jim Adams of Baton Rouge and Frank Maxwell of Delhi tying for fifth at 222.

Scores of par or better on Saturday were turned in by Brennan (68), Sanchez (71), Adams (71), 2009 Champion Doug Farr of Monroe (71), Maxwell (72), Hal Wright of Shreveport (72), Grady Brame of Hammond (72), and Will Dees of Baton Rouge (72).

This year’s Championship was conducted at the University Club of Baton Rouge, home to the LSU golf teams’ recently renovated course.  The course, which will also host the 2012 LGA 4-Ball Championship, continued to draw rave reviews from this field of the top Senior (Age 50 & Over) players in Louisiana.  The University Club’s par-72 track played at 6,600 yards for the final round of this Championship, which was played under the typical hot and humid weather conditions of south Louisiana summertime.  The field was cut to the low 60 and ties after 36 holes with 63 players making the cut at 161.

The 2012 LGA Senior Amateur will be conducted at OakWing Golf Club in Alexandria, August 23-25, 2012.
