AL WYCHE WINS LOUISIANA GOLF ASSOCIATION NET AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Bossier City’s Al Wyche survived a three hole playoff to best defending champion Hal Wright of Shreveport by one shot to win the 2011 Louisiana Golf Association Net Amateur Championship. Wyche, who also won this Championship in 2005, and Wright played in the next-to-last grouping on Sunday, both finishing 36 holes at three-over par 147, one shot ahead of third-place finisher Justin Muller of Youngsville. Rounding out the top five were Matthew Elam of Ethel and Bruce Smith of Mandeville at six-over 150.
Flight winners included: David Burns of Ponchatoula in the Carnoustie flight; Noel Gauthreaux of Loranger in the Troon flight; Steve Garcia of Baton Rouge in the Prestwick flight; and Jason King of Plaquemine in the St. Andrews flight.
This year’s event was held for the fourth consecutive year at the Robert Trent Jones designed Santa Maria Golf Club in Baton Rouge, which played to a par of 72 at 6,600 yards. Sunday’s play was conducted in beautiful weather with a breeze that made club selection challenging. The Santa Maria venue again proved to be an extremely popular venue with the Net Amateur competitors.
The LGA conducts this event to provide a Championship for the higher handicap player with procedures in place to assure that consistency and integrity are benchmarks for the event. The LGA utilizes the USGA Tournament Score Probability Table to adjust any handicap indexes when a player’s score exceeds normal probability.
In the ninth annual Net Club Team Championship, conducted concurrently with the Net Amateur, the team from Beau Chene Country Club in Mandeville took a two-shot win over Oak Knoll Country Club in Hammond. Beau Chene CC teammates Richard Childers, Wiley Conn, Steve Kelly, and Bruce Smith combined to shoot a 29-over par score of 461 to capture the club’s first Net Club Team title.
